'Cradle to CradleCM' in top shape
For Synprodo, Cradle to CradleCM is not a fashion item but a philosophy. We are thoroughly aware of our responsibility with respect to the environment and we take actual steps to protect it. At all of its production locations, Synprodo has its own recycling units where used EPS products are processed into new raw materials. For instance, under the name SynTray® we collect used EPS garden trays for reuse in new products. The environment is an integral and self-evident aspect of our quality policy.

BioFoam®; we cannot make it any greener
Completely compostable with the excellent properties and freedom of design offered by EPS. It seems like a fairytale, but it's just true. This is because we have managed to make expanded granules of foam based on Poly Lactic Acid (PLA), which originates from vegetable waste. Patented technology allows heating and expansion as a result of which a new type of foam has been developed that is completely biodegradable. The new raw material called BioFoam® is as impact resistant and strong as EPS. It does not absorb water and insulates just as effectively. In short, BioFoam® is, with respect to opportunities and properties, indistinguishable from EPS. To increase recognisability and to underline the sustainable nature of the product, the biodegradable BioFoam® has a light green colour.


Minimum use of raw materials
The production of EPS is extremely efficient and uses a minimum of raw material. EPS products consist for 98% of air and 2% of polystyrene. Polystyrene is made from monostyrene, which is a petroleum product. The proportion of petroleum consumption involved in EPS production is less than 0.0007%.


Environmentally sound components
EPS is a foam material that contains 98% air and just 2% raw material. EPS is biologically neutral and has no negative effects on living organisms. EPS consists of only very environmentally sound components:


  • Also occurs as a natural product in food, including strawberries, beans, beer, wine, coffee and cinnamon.
  • Monostyrene is NOT carcinogenic or otherwise hazardous to health or the environment (1998 research carried out by the Health Council of the Netherlands).

Blowing agent

  • Pentane, a naturally occurring saturated hydrocarbon, is used as the blowing agent.
  • Pentane is NOT toxic and does NOT deplete the ozone layer.
  • Emissions from the production process are captured via extraction systems and incinerated in a boiler that features energy recovery.
  • The result: reduced use of fossil fuels and the reduction of CO2 emissions.

Recycled EPS

  • Synprodo reuses both production residues and EPS that is returned from the various sectors.
  • This means a reduced environmental load through saving raw materials and preventing waste.

Use of 'green' electricity

The entire Synbra organization (holding of Synprodo) and its subsidiaries use Green Electricity. The Green Electricity is 100% generated using windmills. In the generation of Green Electricity, no environmentally harmful fossil fuels are used and hardly any polluting substances are released.
